Then check the exercises book to see if you translated correctly, and to do extra exercises in Japanese. Use it to read the grammar for that chapter, memorise that chapter's vocabulary, and do some translation exercises. Start every chapter with the translations book. Get the translations book, exercises book, and kanji booklet. Another excellent adjunct series is the A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar which has three entries that cover basic, intermediate, and advanced grammar. There are also some really really good adjuncts like the Japanese Graded Readers series, and most Kodansha books, but these are only good side resources, and some of them are quite expensive. What RTK does is it gets you acquainted with kanji and give you a method for quickly recalling each kanji and their broad meaning, this serves as a foundation that you can build up on as you keep progressing in the language. Some people say that this method is useless because it doesn't actually teach you kanji, but they miss the point entirely. The best thing about RTK is its simplicity as it only teaches you a broad meaning for each kanji. If you want to learn Kanji, you should pick up the Remembering The Kanji textbook. Right next is Genki, I personally believe that Shin Nihongo no Kiso and Minna no Nihongo are better textbooks than Genki, but the upside to Genki is that it's the textbook most people use, so it's not only easy to find but you'll also get lots of support on the internet if you have questions on particular Genki lessons. Another really good series is Minna no Nihongo. I think that the best one is Shin Nihongo no Kiso but it's hard to find. There are several beginner-level textbooks out there.
